Mudchute Park and Farm covers 32 acres between Millwall Dock and Cubitt Town, on what was the dumping ground for mud dredged from the dock.
How the Mudchute missed being built on
Before 1864 the site was a brickfield worked by the Cubitts. The dock company bought the land for an eastern arm of the Millwall Canal that was never dug, and from 1875 used it to dispose of dredged silt, sent across East Ferry Road through a pipe. The Survey of London notes that after heavy rain in 1906 the mud heap shifted onto Hawkins & Tipson's land next door, pushing down buildings. In 1973 a transfer of most of the site for GLC housing was agreed but never completed; the Association of Island Communities campaigned for open space instead, and a farm and garden were established in 1977. The north-west corner was leased to Associated Dairies in 1980 for the Asda superstore.
Mudchute station opened as a raised station on 31 August 1987. It was rebuilt in a shallow cutting for the extension under the Thames to Lewisham and reopened on 20 November 1999.
Flats and maisonettes round Mudchute Park
On the east side of the park, near Pier Street, the Survey of London records post-war council building. Poplar Borough Council decided in 1964 to round off its Kingfield Street Estate with seven blocks of flats and maisonettes. Seyssel Street and Glengarnock Avenue have five-storey blocks (counting the basement) finished in 1969, with the top two storeys set back behind an access balcony; Stebondale Street has four-storey blocks; the last blocks, on Manchester Road, were completed in 1970. That is 187 homes in all.
At the 2021 Census the area the House of Commons Library names Mudchute (MSOA Tower Hamlets 030, from the Samuda Estate down past Pier Street to Island Gardens) had 2,988 households. 36.5% rented from a council or housing association, 33.6% rented privately and 28.4% owned. Three in four lived in purpose-built flats, and 12.9% in terraced houses.

Parking near the farm in zone D2
The farm has no visitor parking of its own and points drivers to the limited meter bays on Pier Street and the streets nearby. Those streets, and Undine Road by the station, are in Tower Hamlets sub-zone D2, controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, so a weekend visit avoids permit hours and costs the weekday price. The street and the block entrance help us plan where the team can park.

My maisonette has internal stairs. Does that change anything?
Not the method. The racks, trays and runners still come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
How long does a double oven take?
About 2 hours on site, and a single about 90 minutes. Say on the phone if the hob and hood are included.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes. We work seven days a week at the same prices, and Sunday falls outside the D2 controlled hours.
Do I need to empty the oven first?
Yes, please take out anything stored inside, and switch the oven off early so it is cool when we arrive.
