Mornington Crescent first appears in the rate books in 1821, as a single entry with the collector's note to "leave room for 30 houses". According to the Survey of London, all 36 houses were finished and lived in by 1832.
Flats in the crescent's 1820s houses
The Survey describes four-storey blocks flanking the streets that radiate from the crescent, with three-storey houses between them whose attics are lit by dormers in mansard roofs. Every house had a basement with a railed area. Many of the houses were divided into flats in the Victorian years, after the railway reached Euston.
A flat cut out of a house like this tends to have a small kitchen, usually with a built-in single under the worktop or a narrow freestanding cooker, and a staircase between it and the street. In a basement flat the climb is the area steps; in an attic flat it is the whole staircase from the street door.
Neither changes the method. Dust sheets go down first. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in your kitchen, and the door is split where its design allows.
Private renting around the crescent
The census area around the station takes in much of the crescent, Harrington Square and the old Carreras cigarette factory, built on the crescent's garden in the 1920s. In 2021 it had 817 households, and 55.1% of them rented privately, against 35.6% across Camden. Harrington Square and the Ampthill towers
Beside the crescent, Harrington Square is a triangle. When the Survey recorded it, houses Nos. 2 to 14 lined the south side and Nos. 15 to 24 the east, each with a basement and an attic above a moulded cornice. Nos. 15 to 24 on the east side are grade II listed. The south terrace was demolished for new housing in the 1960s, and the Ampthill estate and its three 21-storey towers now stand there. Parking in Camden's CA-F(s) zone
The crescent, the station and Harrington Square sit in CA-F(s), the southern part of Camden Town's parking zone. Camden's open data gives its controlled hours as 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 5.30pm on Saturdays, with no Sunday controls listed. The northern part, CA-F(n), runs to 11pm every day. Visitor permits are bought by residents for their own visitors; for builders and other service providers working at a home, the council sells a separate trade permit for resident bays.
