Two buildings account for most of our Moorgate work. The Barbican Estate holds over 2,060 flats across 40 acres and about 4,000 residents, put up between 1965 and 1976. A short walk west, The Heron at 5 Moor Lane stacked 284 flats into a 36-storey tower finished in September 2013, sharing Milton Court with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Two kinds of flat, a few minutes apart
Barbican kitchens have been refitted one flat at a time across fifty years, so what we open ranges from a 1970s freestanding cooker to a new integrated double, and the side runners are rarely the ones the flat started with. The Heron is the opposite. Miele integrated single ovens, the same unit flat after flat, mostly in studios and one-beds. The hood above them is usually recirculating, which is why it clogs, and that is an extractor hood clean at £28 on top.
The Heron is the only building on our list where we know the oven model before we ring the bell.
Concrete, lifts and a walk from the van
Neither building gives you kerbside you can use. The Barbican sits on a podium and the flats are reached by highwalk, so the van stops on Silk Street or Moor Lane and the racks go up in a lift while the tank heats. All of this is inside the Congestion Charge zone and the ULEZ. We pay it. It is not added to your bill.

The letting side of EC2
Most Heron flats are let, plenty on company tenancies tied to a desk five minutes away on Ropemaker Street. Tenancies end, agents book, and the oven has to photograph clean. Barbican work runs differently. Those are owners, often long-standing ones, who ring once a year rather than at a check-out.
Can you clean a Miele oven without ruining the enamel?
Yes, because nothing caustic touches the cavity. Racks and runners soak in the heated tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products.
Do we need to book a bay with the estate office?
No. We deal with the van ourselves, and there is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
How long will you be in the flat?
Around ninety minutes for a single oven, closer to two hours for a double. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.
