Lower Thames Street is a red route
The City Corporation is the highway authority for every street in the Square Mile bar four red routes, and the A3211, which is Upper and Lower Thames Street plus Byward Street, is one of them. TfL runs that one. You cannot stop on it. So the van turns into Water Lane or St Mary at Hill and the tank waits there while the racks come down, which costs us a few minutes and costs you nothing.
What the kitchens hold
Landmark Place is new-build and consistent: integrated single oven, induction hob, a recirculating hood, and a cavity that in plenty of flats has not been touched since handover. The serviced flats around Monument Street almost always have a built-in microwave sitting above the oven, and a microwave clean is £22. Nobody here has a range cooker.
The tenancy pattern at the river end
Candlewick ward runs east to Gracechurch Street and down to the Monument itself, and it is offices nearly the whole way, with the residents pushed to the river. Those flats turn over quickly, since a river-view one-bed at Sugar Quay is a two-year posting for most of the people living in it rather than a home they will grow old in, and the oven gets done every time one of them leaves.
Do you clean the oven inside the flat?
Yes. Racks, trays and side runners soak in a heated dip tank in the van, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so a flat with sealed windows over the river does not fill with fumes.
Is the parking your problem or mine?
Ours. We handle the red route and the meters, and there is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular.
How long does a single oven take?
About ninety minutes, and a double nearer two hours. It is heat-tested and signed off before we leave.
