Bethlem Royal Hospital, the hospital known as Bedlam, was opened on its new Monks Orchard site, in the London Borough of Bromley, by Queen Mary on 9 July 1930.
Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Monks Orchard estate
Lewis Loyd bought the land in 1854, built Monks Orchard House and named the whole estate after the Monks Orchard wood. The estate came up for sale in 1920, and in 1924 a sale was made to the governors of Bethlem Royal Hospital; an Act of 1926 provided for the hospital's move from Southwark. Building materials came in on a temporary railway from Eden Park station, a hard winter in early 1929 held the work up, and the old house was demolished. The land the hospital did not need was sold for housing.
The old estate is now split between two boroughs. The hospital on Monks Orchard Road has a Beckenham postcode and is in the London Borough of Bromley, while the streets to its west, Elstan Way, Orchard Way and Greenview Avenue among them, are in Croydon's Shirley North ward.
Detached and semi-detached houses round Elstan Way
Croydon's heritage review, which places Elstan Way in Shirley, picks out the cottages there, built around 1878 in yellow London stock brick, as some of the oldest houses in the area. Most of the streets round them went up in the late 1930s.
