The Monks Orchard streets went up almost all at once between 1937 and 1939 on land the Corporation of London did not need after building Bethlem Royal Hospital, so roads like Orchard Grove, Elstan Way and Greenview Avenue share the same interwar mock-Tudor semis and the same generous kitchens. That period stock mostly runs freestanding cookers and double ovens rather than fitted integrated units, which suits the dip-tank method because there is room to lift the shelves and runners straight out. The estate borders Beckenham and Shirley, and the A232 Wickham Road forms the northern edge that a technician comes in on.
The clean runs the same every visit. Racks, shelves, trays and the side runners lift out and soak in a heated tank in the van. The cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products, so no chemical smell is left behind. The door is split where the design allows so the inner pane comes clear. Then the oven is heat-tested and signed off.

Parking on the estate
Parking is easy here. The 1930s roads were laid out with driveways and verges, so on Orchard Grove and the roads around it the van and the tank fit outside the house without a permit.

Is there a chemical smell after?
No. The caustic soaking is done in the tank in the van. Indoors it is non-caustic products by hand, so the oven is usable that same evening.
Can you pull a freestanding cooker out to clean behind it?
Yes. On the freestanding doubles common here we move the cooker to reach the sides and back, then slide it home once the cavity is done.
How long does a double take?
About two hours, longer than a single, because both cavities and every shelf go through the tank.
