Houses on the Monkhams estate were originally given names instead of numbers, and the roads were laid out on curves that follow the old contours rather than a grid. That is a deliberate piece of design, not an accident of growth. The land belonged to Stratford Langthorne Abbey from the twelfth century, and Snakes Lane was diverted in 1820 to tidy the holding up.
A shipbuilder lived here, then sold up
Arnold Hills, chairman of the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company and the man who started the works football club in 1895 that turned into West Ham United, had the house at Monkhams in the late nineteenth century, put fountains and illuminations in the grounds, and then lost the lot: his money collapsed and the estate went to a developer, James Twentyman, in 1903. The hall itself came down in 1930 when Park Avenue was cut through.
Big detached houses, big cookers
The southern part was up by 1914 and the rest was finished in garden-suburb style through the 1930s, which is why Monkhams Avenue and Monkhams Drive are detached and low-density rather than semis in rows. Kitchens in that stock are large, often rebuilt at the back, and the appliance is frequently a 90cm range or a two-oven AGA rather than a built-under single. A 90cm range cooker clean is £114 and an AGA with two ovens is £143. Those are the prices on the phone, with no premium for an IG8 0 postcode.
Driveways make this straightforward
Monkhams runs up to the southern edge of Epping Forest, meets the Essex border towards Buckhurst Hill on the east, and joins Woodford Green to the west. Nearly everything has off-street parking. The van holds the heated tank, so racks, shelves, trays and side runners soak outside while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we go.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
