The west tower of St Mary the Virgin, the parish church in the village centre, is dated 1494, and the church stands on a 12th-century site.
A conservation area since December 1968
Barnet made Monken Hadley one of its first four conservation areas in December 1968. It took in the cluster of houses round the church, Hadley Green and the Great North Road up to Hadley Highstone, and in February 1979 it was stretched south to the top of Chipping Barnet High Street. About three-quarters of it is Green Belt. The parish belonged to Middlesex until 1889, then to Hertfordshire until 1965, when it joined Greater London.

Georgian houses on Hadley Green
Large Georgian houses with big gardens were built round the Green and along the edge of the Common as residences for the London gentry. Hadley Green Road still has a string of mainly Georgian listed buildings: The Grange (mid-18th century), Ossulston House (1764) and two cottages, The Old Cottage and Hadley Cote, all looking over Joslin's Pond. Wilbraham's and Pagitt's almshouses are on the same road. The Great North Road was re-aligned onto its present line through Hadley Green in 1826, and Hadley Highstone is lined with groups of small Victorian cottages in stock brick or stucco.
That mix shows in the 2021 figures for Barnet 001D: 25.6% of households in a detached house, 21.0% in a semi and 41.0% in a terrace, with only 6.6% in a purpose-built flat. Houses of that size can have room for a range or an AGA; a small cottage on the Highstone is more likely to have a built-in single or a narrow freestanding cooker.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
