Mitcham Junction station opened on 1 October 1868 with the Peckham Rye to Sutton line, and Merton's photo archive has a view of it taken soon afterwards from the Carshalton Road bridge. The stock-brick station building is locally listed, according to Merton's draft character study. The houses round it sit on the south-west edge of Mitcham Common, next to the golf course, which was established on the Common in the late 1890s and covered far more of it until the club's rights ended in 1924.
Mitcham Garden Village, built for older residents
Between Carshalton Road and the railway is Mitcham Garden Village, built between 1929 and 1932 and conceived by a local benefactor as homes for elderly people from Mitcham. The architects, Chart, Son and Reading, set ten terraces of four two-storey houses, plus two pairs of semis, round greens off a keyhole-shaped close. The cottages have Tudor-style gables, timber framing and big chimneys, and the whole enclave is locally listed and part of the Mitcham Cricket Green Conservation Area.
Small two-storey cottages like these more often have a single oven or a slim freestanding cooker than a range. Dust sheets go down first. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand indoors. A single takes about 90 minutes.
1930s houses on Carshalton Road and Aspen Gardens
The houses on Carshalton Road date from the 1930s, some with Arts and Crafts touches, and on Aspen Gardens pebbledash and red tile hanging are common. The 2021 Census area Merton 022B takes in the station, Aspen Gardens, the Garden Village and Goat Road, and runs north to Bramcote Avenue; it counted 723 households: 33.6% in a terraced house, 21.7% in a semi, 23.9% in a purpose-built flat and 12.3% in part of a converted house.
Renting is common. 33.5% of those households rented privately, 16.9% rented from the council or another social landlord, and 49.2% owned their home. Parking near Mitcham Junction
Merton's list of roads in controlled parking zones (updated April 2026) has no entry for Carshalton Road, Aspen Gardens or Goat Road. That does not mean anywhere goes. Merton's study calls Carshalton Road heavily congested, and yellow lines still apply, so tell us when you book if there is a drive or a side road the van can use.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
