Mitcham Fair was held on the Fair Green, the town's Upper Green, from 12 to 14 August every year until 1924. The traffic it caused got it moved in 1925 to Three Kings Piece, common land south-east of the green, and the Merton Historical Society says the fair still starts around 12 August.
Flats over the shops round the Upper Green
The Upper Green sits where the old roads from Merton, Tooting, Streatham, Croydon, Beddington and Sutton meet. Merton's draft character study for the town describes the land round it as mostly shops with homes and offices over them, and on the north and east sides of the green many boundaries kept the long, narrow shape of medieval house plots. Up London Road, Eagle House, built in 1705, is listed Grade I, and the Neo-Georgian library a little further on dates from 1933. East of the green, around St Mark's Church, the streets were laid out mostly in the 1930s as short two-storey terraces, with blocks of flats up to six storeys at Armfield Crescent.
A flat over a shop usually has its own door between the shopfronts and a staircase up. That does not change the job: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.
Semis south of the Cricket Green
The Domesday Book counted 250 people in two hamlets, Mitcham and Whitford. Merton's draft study puts Whitford, now called Lower Mitcham, on the site of the Cricket Green neighbourhood. Lower Green West and the Cricket Green were under the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury, so they stayed protected as common land. The same study says cricket was played on the green from as early as 1707; the London Gardens Trust gives 1685. Vestry Hall opened beside the green in 1887, and much of the neighbourhood has been in the Mitcham Cricket Green Conservation Area since 1968.
The houses came later. Mitcham's population doubled between 1900 and 1910, and new streets were laid out south of the green between 1890 and 1916. Merton describes the semi-detached houses south of the green as a planned development, with Mitcham Park having the widest plots and narrower plots on Bramcote Avenue and Denham Crescent. Flats and social renting in Cricket Green ward
Cricket Green ward covers the Cricket Green, Vestry Hall and the streets south of them, including Mitcham Park and Bramcote Avenue. The shops, library and St Mark's area east of the Fair Green are mostly in Figge's Marsh ward, so these figures describe the south of Mitcham, not the town centre. At the 2021 Census the ward had 4,234 households. 42.6% lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 30.5% in a terraced house and 14.6% in a semi. A third of households (33.9%) rented from the council or another social landlord, and 26.7% rented privately.

Mitcham's parking zones keep different hours
Merton lists seven parking zones for Mitcham, and the hours vary a lot. Langdale Avenue, Elmwood Road and Whitford Gardens, between the two greens, are in zone MTC, controlled from 8.30am until 11pm, Monday to Saturday. Mitcham Park is in zone MT, where the controls last only from 11am to 3pm on weekdays. Merton's study calls on-street parking round the centre a problem, so tell us the road when you book, and say if there is a drive or a space at the back the van can use.
