Brunel's Great Eastern went into the Thames sideways from a Millwall shipyard: the first attempt was on 3 November 1857, and the ship finally floated on 31 January 1858. What is left of its timber launch ways, beside Burrells Wharf, has been a scheduled monument since July 2015 and shows on the foreshore at low tide.

Millwall is the west and south side of the Isle of Dogs, named after the windmills that stood on the river wall in the 18th century. This page covers the south-west corner, the riverside off Westferry Road from Masthouse Terrace to St David's Square, much of which stayed industrial into the 1980s.
Burrells Wharf was a paint and varnish works from 1888, in buildings first put up for the shipbuilder John Scott Russell. Its Victorian works ranges were listed at Grade II in 1983, the firm closed in 1986, and the buildings were converted to flats in the late 1980s. Along the river to the east, the Millwall Lead Works at Locke's Wharf shut in the early 1980s and the cleared ground stood empty until 1999, when St George started St David's Square: four river-facing blocks with wave-shaped roofs, taller blocks behind them and a run of townhouses, finished in 2000. Masthouse Terrace went up in the early 1990s on the site of the Providence Iron Works.
Flats built or converted from the late 1980s on usually have a fitted kitchen, which often means a built-in oven: a single in a tall unit or under the worktop, or a double. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.

Parking for the van in zones D1 and D2
Tower Hamlets puts the Isle of Dogs in parking zone D. The council's 2020 zone map splits it into D1 in the north of the island and D2 in the south: Masthouse Terrace, Burrells Wharf, St David's Square and Langbourne Place are in the southern part, D2, while the north end of Millwall, round the Barkantine Estate and Millharbour, is in D1. Both are controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, and the council's zone page says the bay controls are lifted on public holidays. It also says its restrictions apply to public roads only, with other restrictions on private land and council estates. In the private riverside schemes, then, it comes down to what the building allows. The team needs somewhere to park, so tell us about any visitor bay, loading space or concierge when you call.

Is a Saturday visit dearer?
No. Weekends cost the weekday price, and zone D is controlled on weekdays only, so permit hours on the public roads do not apply on a Saturday.
The flat is empty between tenants. Can you collect keys?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us where the keys are held when you book, and the invoice can go to the agency.
What needs doing before you arrive?
