Almost nothing here is old. The London County Council cleared close to 200 houses and vacant plots at the start of the 1960s, and of the 800 homes that stood in pre-war North Millwall only 300 survived the demolition. What replaced them was the Barkantine Estate, approved in March 1965 and opened in stages from 1968: 634 dwellings, four 21-storey point blocks of 80 flats each named Topmast, Midship, Knighthead and Bowsprit, plus maisonette blocks along Alpha Grove and Cheval Street and low blocks on Janet Street and Strafford Street.
Two kinds of kitchen on one peninsula
The estate flats are compact, and a flat of that build normally has one built-under oven, which is £77 and takes about ninety minutes. The other half of Millwall arrived with the docks going out of trade and the flats coming in around Millharbour and the water of Millwall Dock, cut through to the Thames in the 1860s. Those newer blocks come with a fitted kitchen out of the box: one integrated oven at £77, a hob at £23–28, and an extractor hood at £28 that can go on the same visit.
The caustic work never comes indoors
Whichever half of Millwall you are in, the kitchen is part of the room you live in, so the method matters. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners are carried down to the heated tank in the van and soaked there, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors with non-caustic products. There is no chemical smell left behind, and the oven is heat-tested before it is signed off.
