The Ridgeway, the road along the top of Mill Hill, was already a route from Hendon by way of Bittacy Hill and Highwood Hill in the 14th century. Merchants later built country houses on the roadside wastes the manor sold off, and two of them, Belmont and Littleberries, survive inside later buildings of Belmont School and St Vincent's.

Barnet made the old village a conservation area in December 1968 and soon afterwards brought most of it under an Article 4 direction, which controls even doors, windows and porches. The area covers about 152 hectares, with roughly 260 houses strung out for a mile along the ridge: brick and weatherboard cottages of the kind rural Middlesex built, between large institutional buildings. The council's appraisal says the interwar spread of London stopped short of the village because of the height of the hill and the distance from any station. The appraisal also singles out the large Arts and Crafts semis of Winterstoke Gardens, and Wills Grove, where former boarding and staff houses of Mill Hill School have partly become private houses and flats.
A weatherboard cottage usually has a small kitchen, and a freestanding cooker is common in rooms that size. A boarding house split into flats has whatever the conversion fitted, which may well be a built-in single.
Poets Corner, laid out in 1878
West of Hammers Lane, the Birkbeck Freehold Land Society divided the late Sir Charles Flower's land into about 500 plots in 1878, on roads named after Byron, Milton, Shakespeare and Tennyson. Building was slow. On the Ordnance Survey map of 1896 only a tenth of the plots had houses.

The price follows the appliance, from a single to a two-oven AGA, and it is agreed on the phone before anyone comes out. A single takes about 90 minutes on site; a two-oven AGA takes half a day and has to be switched off the night before.
Where to park on the Ridgeway
The appraisal calls The Ridgeway and Highwood Hill busy through routes. The pavement runs out at Holcombe Hill, and Highwood Hill has a pavement on its western side only. Winterstoke Gardens sits behind a planted boundary with a footpath in front, and Wills Grove is a private road with a shared surface.
