Before it was Mill Hill East this end of Mill Hill was called Bittacy Hill. Bittacy House and its farm were the main estates until the 1860s, and the farm carried on until 1908.
From the barracks to Millbrook Park
Mill Hill Barracks, later Inglis Barracks, was the home of the Middlesex Regiment, the Die-Hards, from 1905 into the early 1960s, and many houses were added there as married quarters in the 1960s and 1970s. In October 2011 Barnet gave outline planning permission for 2,174 homes on the 34-hectare site, with a primary school, almost 6 hectares of parks and open space, and a district energy centre. The plan was to sell the site on in phases to individual builders. The last two phases, approved in 2019, add 52 houses and 278 flats on ground that rises about 15 metres from south to north.
The Census small area by the station (Barnet 017B), which takes in the early phases of Millbrook Park as well as houses on Bittacy Hill, had 913 households in 2021. Of those, 72.7% lived in a purpose-built flat. 45.8% owned their home, 29.1% rented from the council or a housing association and 23.6% rented privately.
The older streets by the station
The railway came first. In 1865 more than a hundred navvies and brickmakers arrived to build the viaduct over the Dollis Brook, and the station opened in 1867 as plain Mill Hill. It is now the terminus of a single-track branch of the Northern line from Finchley Central. In the triangle of Bittacy Hill, the railway and Saunders Lane, houses went up for railway and gas workers on Murray Road, Station Villas and the south side of Saunders Lane; the gas works opened in 1862 and were demolished in 2000, and a Waitrose replaced them. The council built maisonettes north of Saunders Lane in about 1932.
