Mile End Old Town was a hamlet of Stepney parish, covering 677 acres, and it survived as a civil parish until 1927, when it was merged into a single Stepney parish.
Where the old hamlet's name survives
The council's appraisal for the Stepney Green conservation area, designated in January 1973, says it covers the area previously known as Mile End Old Town, and the Mile End Old Town Residents' Association is among the local groups it lists. The conservation area takes in a long stretch of Mile End Road, including Stepney Green station, opened in 1902 on the Whitechapel and Bow Railway.
Just south of the station, Louisa Street and Louisa Gardens were built in the 1820s and 1830s. The appraisal says that they and Maria Terrace were built at the same time by two sisters, in two different styles: two-storey terraces on Louisa Street and Louisa Gardens, and three-storey brick houses with gothic arches over the front doors on Maria Terrace. Nos. 14 to 24 Louisa Street and 1 to 10 Maria Terrace are listed Grade II.
Private lets and flats over shops
In the census area that includes Louisa Street and Hayfield Yard (Tower Hamlets 016D), 40.3% of the 775 households rented privately in 2021, well above the 26.8% for St Dunstan's ward as a whole. Another 4.4% lived in a commercial building, the census category that includes flats over shops.
A private let usually ends with a checkout inspection, and the oven is one of the things the clerk looks at.
