Mile End New Town became a hamlet of Stepney parish in 1690. It was small, about 42 acres east of Spitalfields, with Old Montague Street on its southern side.
A hamlet name from 1690 to 1921
The hamlet became its own civil parish in 1866 and was merged into Whitechapel on 1 April 1921; Deal Street is in Spitalfields and Banglatown ward today. The model cottages on Deal Street
The Metropolitan Association for Improving the Dwellings of the Industrious Classes built its second model estate in Mile End New Town in the late 1840s, on the east side of Deal Street: family flats, a lodging house for single men (the Artisan's Home, opened in December 1849) and terraces of cottages. Two runs of cottages survive, both Grade II, and the listings say probably by Henry Roberts. Albert Cottages, 19-26 Deal Street, are listed as 1858: yellow stock brick with red brick round the doors and windows. Victoria Cottages are listed as 1864: fourteen two-storey houses in an L-shaped row, each divided into two units. Newlon Housing Trust modernised both in the late 1970s.
A cottage divided into two homes tends to have a compact kitchen, often with a built-in single or a narrow freestanding cooker. Dust sheets go down first, the removable parts come out to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and door glass are cleaned by hand.
Houses as well as flats
The 2021 Census area around Deal Street had about 500 households, and 22.2% of them lived in a terraced house, a high share for this part of Tower Hamlets; 59.6% were in purpose-built flats. Tenure splits almost into thirds: 33.5% rented privately, 31.7% from a social landlord, and 31.3% owned.

Parking between zones A2 and A6
Deal Street is in one of the council's Bethnal Green zones, A2 or A6. A2 is controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, and Sunday morning to 2pm; A6 runs weekdays to 7pm and Sunday to 2pm (its 10pm residents' bays are west of Brick Lane). Neither zone has controlled hours on Saturday.
