The A227 Wrotham Road through Meopham was a droveway in Saxon times, used to drive animals south to pasture in the Weald, and it still keeps to the high ground between the dry valleys on either side.

More than half the households live in detached houses
The appraisal notes that the station on the line to London Victoria has long made Meopham attractive to commuters. Summed over the 21 census output areas the ONS assigns to the parish, 54.0% of the 2,732 households lived in a detached house in 2021 and 31.1% in a semi; terraces came to 7.5% and flats to under 4%.
A detached house often has a bigger kitchen, and a bigger kitchen is likelier to hold a range cooker, a built-in double or an AGA. With a range, the racks, trays and side runners from both ovens come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavities, fan covers and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, on dust sheets. Houses on the Wrotham Road
The same appraisal calls heavy traffic on the Wrotham Road a permanent negative feature of the conservation area. If your house fronts the A227, say so when you book and tell us whether the van can pull onto the drive. Off the main road, in side roads such as Tradescant Drive, Cedar Close and Poplar Walk, the van stops wherever the signs allow. Tradescant Drive shares its name with the 17th-century royal gardener John Tradescant, who lived in Meopham and is said to have planted the mulberry trees north of Meopham Green.
