Meopham Parish Council worked out of a windmill for fifty years, until 2023. Killick's Mill went up in 1801, built by the Killick family of Strood, and it is hexagonal in plan where almost every other smock mill in the country is octagonal. It last turned by wind in 1929, ran on an oil engine and then an electric motor until 1965, and is listed Grade II*.
The longest village claim is the village's own
The parish council's guide states plainly that Meopham is the longest village in England, and the line gets repeated everywhere locally. It is also contested. Brinkworth in Wiltshire claims the same title, and the length quoted for Meopham shifts depending who is writing it down, from roughly five miles to seven. The shape is not in dispute. The A227 Wrotham Road, turnpiked in 1825, runs the entire length of the parish, and Harvel, Dodmore, Culverstone and Nurstead hang off it across six and a half square miles that held 6,795 people at the 2021 census.
One road, so say which end
A single oven takes about ninety minutes and a double about two hours, and that is as true at Nurstead as it is at Harvel, but a parish this long means the address does most of the work when the day gets planned, so give us the hamlet rather than only the postcode when you ring. No controlled parking zone reaches out here. The van brings its own heated tank and its own water, the racks, shelves, trays and side runners go out to it, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. The tank does that part. Soaking off years of carbon is what the heated tank is for, and the figure is agreed on the phone before we set off, not after we open the door.
Do the racks leave the house?
They go out to the van and come back the same visit, cleaned and dry. Nothing is taken away overnight.
