Sir John Vanbrugh built Vanbrugh Castle on Maze Hill for his own residence; the list entry dates it to 1717 with later additions, and an LCC blue plaque says he lived there c.1719-26. It is listed Grade I.
Houses along the east wall of Greenwich Park
The brick wall built round the park in the reign of James I, from 1619, kept building off the royal land, so houses on the eastern edge were slow to appear. Vanbrugh built more houses on the twelve acres he owned, but only his own survives. Royal Greenwich's 2010 appraisal of the Greenwich Park conservation area (designated in 1970) notes that a single plain brick terrace stands on the park side of Maze Hill, put up in 1806 as the infirmary of the Naval Asylum School. Across the road the buildings run from modern four-storey flats to early Georgian town houses such as Nos 47 and 49. The south-facing terraces on Park Vista were built approximately in line with the Queen's House, and Maze Hill rises to the John Roan School building of 1928.
Flats on the station side of Maze Hill
The census area that takes in Maze Hill station, Tom Smith Close and Vanbrugh Castle and runs east over Westcombe Park Road to Coleraine and Foyle Roads (Greenwich 016D) had 953 households in 2021. 57.1% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats, 13.2% in a converted or shared house and 13.7% in a semi-detached house. Just under half (49.1%) owned their home, and 7.1% were in shared ownership, against 2.2% across the borough.
So a visit here might be a built-in single in a block by the station, or a double or a range in one of the Georgian houses facing the park. The method is the same: dust sheets first, the racks, trays and side runners out to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass degreased by hand indoors. The traffic filter at Tom Smith Close
Maze Hill is part of the East Greenwich neighbourhood management scheme, which Royal Greenwich decided to make permanent in February 2026. A camera-enforced filter at the junction with Tom Smith Close works from 7am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday, and a vehicle that is not exempt gets a penalty charge notice if it is driven through in those hours. Vanbrugh Park at St Johns Park and Halstow Road have filters too. Does the filter affect a weekend booking?
No. It runs on weekdays only, and a Saturday or Sunday visit costs the same as a weekday one.
My house faces the park and has a 90cm range. How long will it take?
Two to three hours. Both ovens are done, and the racks and runners from each are soaked and cleaned separately.
Can the microwave be cleaned at the same visit?
Yes, for £22 on top of the oven price. Say so when you call so the time allows for it.
Do I need to empty the oven first?
Please take out any trays or dishes you keep in it. Everything else, racks and runners included, is removed by us.
