No. 3 Tilney Street, near its South Audley Street end, is a brown-brick town house of about 1740 by Edward Shepherd, who built up Shepherd Market between 1735 and 1746 on the open ground where the May fair was held.
Mayfair houses, from 1740 to the 1890s
Westminster's summary of the Mayfair conservation area, first designated in 1969, says the district was almost completely built up by 1780 on the street grids of three big estates. As the 99-year leases ran out, houses were rebuilt in waves: stucco Italianate in the mid-nineteenth century, Queen Anne from the 1870s, neo-Georgian after the First World War.
Mount Street shows the Queen Anne wave best. In 1880 the Duke of Westminster said he wanted it rebuilt in small private houses instead of shops, in red brick faced with terracotta or stone. Nos. 45-52 on the north side are terrace houses of 1891-93 by John E. Trollope, four storeys over a basement with gabled attics. Shops came back elsewhere on the street, with flats over them on the south side (1886-95) and at Audley Mansions, J.T. Wimperis's block of 1884-86 at the corner of South Audley Street.
Whole houses are still commoner in this corner of Mayfair than in the West End as a whole. In the Census output area that takes in Park Lane around the Dorchester, with South Street, Tilney Street, Aldford Street and Stanhope Gate, 20.7% of the 82 households in 2021 had a whole house, against 5.2% across the West End ward. Nearly half (48.1%) owned their home.
A house has room for a bigger cooker than a flat does, and a whole Mayfair house is where a 90cm range or an AGA is most likely; a flat in one of the mansion blocks usually has a built-in single or double. The method is the same for all of them: removable parts come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and glass are done by hand indoors, on dust sheets.

Parking for the van in Mayfair
Park Lane is a Transport for London red route, so the van works from the streets behind it. Those are in Westminster's zone E, Mayfair and St James's. Paid bays and single yellow lines there are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. Resident bays are controlled 24 hours a day on every day of the year, and the council's table notes that bank holidays include Christmas Day.
Westminster has no visitor permits for on-street parking. Its daily trade permit for zone E does let a tradesperson's vehicle use resident bays between 8am and 5.30pm, and paid bays between 8.30am and 6.30pm, while work is going on at an address. An AGA, which takes about half a day, fits inside that window if the visit starts in the morning.
