Matching Tye is built round a small triangular green, and Chapman and André's county map of 1777 already shows it much as it is now, with more buildings then on the south side of the green.
Listed buildings round the green
The centre became a conservation area in 1977. It runs along Harlow Road from Rose Cottage to The Woodlands, and along Matching Road as far as The Old Manse. Most buildings inside it are detached, two storeys high and from the 19th century or earlier. Seven are listed Grade II, among them Shetlocks Farmhouse, a 17th-century timber-framed house with its lobby entrance beside the chimney, and Little Brewers, a late 16th-century house that was split into three tenements in the early 19th century and made back into one home in the 20th. Ployters Farmhouse apparently takes its name from the family of Maurice le Playtere, recorded in 1288.
The Victoria County History (1983) records little building in the parish since the 18th century apart from infilling at Matching Green and a small council estate at the Tye in the 1950s. The council's 2007 appraisal adds that the Rainbow Road housing estate went up west of the village in the second half of the 20th century, with several detached houses to the north along Harlow Road, and that green belt policy strictly controls new building. In the census output area that includes the Tye and Carters Green (about 110 households), 62.7% of households lived in a detached house in 2021, and a quarter (25.0%) rented privately.
Older timber-framed houses often have small, low kitchens, and a freestanding cooker or a range is a common fit. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. In the kitchen, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand over dust sheets.
Parking near the green at Matching Tye
Both halves of the green have a kerb round them to stop cars driving or parking on the grass, and the council's 2007 appraisal noted that too many cars parked round it can sometimes spoil the look of it. Most traffic through the village uses Harlow Road. If the house has a drive, the van can use it, which helps.
