Matching is a parish of small hamlets
St Mary the Virgin, Matching Hall, the Vicarage and the Feast Room form a group on a green near the middle of the parish, and the church and the Feast Room are both listed Grade II*. By the 18th century the main settlement was Matching Green, in the south, which straddles the boundary with High Laver; smaller hamlets of medieval origin sit at Carter's Green and Matching Tye to the south-west and at Newman's End to the north-west. Three manor houses, Housham Hall, Parvills and Stock Hall, stand on or near their medieval sites.
The roads are old too. Down Hall Road, from Matching Green towards Hatfield Heath, was part of the highway from Chipping Ongar to Bishop's Stortford in the 13th century, and Potash Road runs north-east from the green.
Matching's population, from 1801 to 2021
The parish had 540 people in 1801 and 687 in 1841, then shrank to 463 by 1921. After it took in part of Harlow parish in 1955 it had 793 people in 1971, and the 2021 Census counted 981 residents. The four census output areas that make up the parish hold 391 households, and the housing figures below are for those.
Half the households (50.6%) had a detached house, more than twice the Epping Forest district share of 23.1%, and another 37.2% a semi. Over a third (36.3%) owned outright, with no mortgage. An AGA or a range is likeliest in the old farmhouses and manor houses; a semi is more likely to have a built-in single or double.
AGAs and range cookers in Matching
An AGA cannot be cleaned hot. It has to be switched off the night before so the cast iron has cooled by morning, and a two-oven AGA takes about half a day. A range or a standard oven is quicker: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen.
