Chiltern Street was called East Street until 1937. It belongs to the Portman Estate, with the red-brick Portman Mansions of the 1890s at its northern end and the old Manchester Square fire station, listed Grade II, at its southern end.
Portman Estate mansion flats
The Portman Estate covers 110 acres of Marylebone, from Edgware Road to beyond Baker Street, and its history goes back to a lease granted to Sir William Portman in 1532. William Baker laid out Baker Street on the estate's land in 1755. The Georgian houses came first; the mansion blocks came at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th.

Loading and parking around Chiltern Street
Chiltern Street, Baker Street, Gloucester Place and York Street are all on Westminster's list of traffic-sensitive streets, where marshals watch loading vans more closely. The council's loading rules give a commercial vehicle this long, where no loading ban applies:

These streets are in sub-zone F2: paid bays and single yellow lines are controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and resident bays 8.30am to 8.30pm every day. Baker Street and Gloucester Place have both run two ways since 2019, so reaching a free bay no longer means a loop of the old one-way system.
