The Howard de Walden Estate rebuilt almost all of Marylebone High Street around 1900, which is why both sides are tall red brick with stone dressings and shaped gables, and why so many of the homes are flats above shops.
Flats over the High Street shops
Westminster's audit of the Harley Street conservation area, which includes the High Street, says that rebuilding left it almost entirely a shopping street, with late Victorian and Edwardian flats and mansion blocks on the floors above. A flat over a shop usually has its own street door and a stair, and a kitchen with room for a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker. Stairs make no difference to the method. Racks, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity and fan cover are degreased by hand upstairs, on dust sheets, with the inner door glass done where the door design allows.
Model housing south of Paddington Street
Not every home here was built for the well-off. South of Paddington Street the same audit picks out a cluster of mid and late Victorian social housing on small pedestrian alleys. Octavia Hill's first housing project survives at 1-3 Garbutt Place, once Paradise Place: houses she renovated in 1865. The Grotto in Grotto Passage was a ragged school of 1846, and the Ossington Buildings of 1888 were model housing for working families, with a shared entrance and stair balconies behind iron railings. At the top of the High Street, a small garden laid out in 1951 marks where the old St Marylebone church stood until it was bombed and then demolished in 1949.

Does a self-cleaning oven still need a clean?
A refitted kitchen above a shop may have a pyrolytic oven. The two approaches do different jobs:
- Pyrolytic cycle
- Heats the empty cavity until baked-on grease turns to ash, which is then wiped out. Racks and trays usually have to come out first, so they still need cleaning another way.
- Soak and hand clean
- Racks, trays and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, and the door is split where its design allows.

A four-hour bay and a long clean
Marylebone High Street, Paddington Street and Moxon Street are all on Westminster's list of traffic-sensitive streets, and the paid bays nearby are in zone F, controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. The council's zones and prices page puts the maximum stay at usually four hours and warns that paying again does not extend it: overstay and a penalty notice can follow even after payment.
Four hours covers a single (about 90 minutes), a double (about two hours) and a 90cm range (two to three hours). A two-oven AGA takes about half a day, which can run past that limit. Westminster sells a daily trades permit for each zone, valid only in the zone it is bought for, and issues no visitor permits for a resident to lend.
