Marks Gate is where the old parish of Dagenham was at its narrowest. The Victoria County History gives its width here as 600 yards, and records the suggestion that this waist dates from a 15th-century boundary change that moved the manor house of Marks into the Liberty of Havering.
The estate north of Eastern Avenue
The name comes from a gate into Hainault Forest near that manor house, the Mildmay family's seat, which was pulled down in 1808. Most of the forest was cleared in 1853, but little else changed until Eastern Avenue opened just to the south in 1925. From 1950 the borough councils of Dagenham and Ilford built a housing estate on the far side of the new road, and the county history notes it was denser than Becontree, with a much larger share of maisonettes and blocks of flats.
Highview House, a 17-storey tower of 96 dwellings on Hatch Grove, was started in 1965, and the borough archive has a 1971 photograph of three-storey flats on Padnall Road. The county history says Rose Lane at Marks Gate was named after a medieval family.
Post-war council flats and maisonettes usually have compact kitchens, and the cooker may be a freestanding one or a built-in single under the worktop. A three-storey block usually has no lift. That changes nothing about the method: the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen. Parking for the van in Marks Gate
Barking and Dagenham extended its controlled parking zone CH on 23 June 2025 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm), but the streets in the council notice are off the High Road in Chadwell Heath, such as Kings Avenue and Burchett Way. No Marks Gate road is in it. Estate bays and car parks can carry their own rules, so the signs on the day are what count. What needs to be ready when you arrive?
The oven switched off and cool, a working socket in the kitchen, and somewhere for the van near your door.
