Markhouse Road keeps the name of the manor of Mark, which lay across the old Leyton and Walthamstow boundary between the common marsh and Hoe Street. One of the boundary posts stood at Mark House, and by the 15th century the manor went by that name.
Markhouse Lane, Boundary Road and Queens Road
Markhouse Lane was widened in 1773. After Walthamstow's common fields were inclosed in 1850, Boundary Road and Queens Road were built to link Markhouse Road and Hoe Street, and streets were laid out on the old common land from then on.
Two churches mark the change. The Lighthouse Methodist Church on Markhouse Road was begun in January 1892 and finished in 1893 to designs by J. Williams Dunford, on a site given by Captain King of the Bullard King steamship line; its tower originally had a revolving light, and in 1903 it was the best-attended nonconformist church in Walthamstow, with congregations of over 1,500. The church of St Barnabas on St Barnabas Road, by W. D. Caröe, followed in 1902 with its parish hall beside it, and the church is listed Grade II*.
A ward of terraced houses
Markhouse survived the 2022 boundary review as a ward, now electing two councillors, down from three. At the 2021 Census 45.7% of its 3,197 households lived in a terraced house, the third highest share of the borough's 22 wards and well above the 34.7% for Waltham Forest as a whole. 26.5% were in a purpose-built block and 9.0% in a converted or shared house. 43.9% owned, 32.7% rented privately and 21.8% rented from a social landlord. The ward line runs through the Markhouse Road area, though: of the postcodes within about 100 metres of the Lighthouse church, some are in Markhouse ward and some in St James ward, so these figures describe the ward rather than every street named above.
