Great Cumberland Place runs north from Marble Arch to Bryanston Square, and nos 58-68 are Portman Estate town houses of about 1800-20: stock brick with stucco on the ground floor, five storeys over a basement, and their original cast-iron balconies at first-floor level.
Portman Estate houses north of the arch
In Montagu Square, the houses at 13-17 on the east side date from about 1810-11 and were designed by J.T. Parkinson for the Portman Estate. Westminster's conservation area summary says the Portman family still own most of the land between Oxford Street and the line of Bryanston Place, Montagu Place and Dorset Street; the council made the Portman Estate a conservation area in 1967, and the estate carries on north into Marylebone.
Few of these houses are still one home. The Census area that runs north from Oxford Street between Portman Street and Great Cumberland Place, Montagu Square included (Westminster 012A), had 602 households in 2021. Of those, 31.1% lived in part of a converted or shared house and 47.5% in a purpose-built block. A flat made from the upper floors of a Georgian house usually has a compact kitchen with a built-in single, and no lift.
Height changes the carrying and nothing else. Racks, shelves, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. Upstairs, with dust sheets on the floor, the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand, and the door comes apart where its design allows.
Lettings around Montagu Square
Two households in three rented privately in that Census area in 2021 (66.7%), and 26.5% owned their home. Where most flats are let, the oven is one of the things an inventory clerk opens at checkout. The newest flats are at the arch itself. Almacantar acquired Marble Arch Tower, a 1960s office block, in 2012 and replaced it with Marble Arch Place, designed by Rafael Viñoly. The taller of its two buildings rises eighteen storeys, and The Bryanston, 54 flats with their own entrance, takes the floors up to the top. The appliance sets the price. A single, a double, a 90cm range and an AGA each have one fixed figure, and the figure agreed on the phone is the one on the invoice.
Parking for the van near Marble Arch
Park Lane, the Edgware Road and the Marble Arch junction are all on Transport for London's red route network, so the van uses the side streets. North of Oxford Street those streets are in Westminster's zone F, Hyde Park, Marylebone and Fitzrovia. Paid bays and single yellow lines there are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday. On the council's resident bay map, the streets east of Great Cumberland Place, from Montagu Square down to Oxford Street, are sub-zones F2 and F3, where resident bays are controlled from 8.30am to 8.30pm every day; the streets just west of Great Cumberland Place are F6, controlled 24 hours.
Westminster runs no visitor permit scheme for on-street parking, and a commercial vehicle gets 20 minutes to load in a paid or resident bay during controlled hours. A clean takes longer than that, so the van needs a paid bay or the council's daily trade permit, which covers paid bays from 8.30am to 6.30pm and resident bays from 8am to 5.30pm while work is done at the address. No. Tell us the floor when you book so the timing allows for the stairs.
Can you come on a Sunday?
Yes. We work seven days a week, and a weekend visit costs the weekday price. Sunday is also the one day when the paid bays and single yellow lines in zone F are not controlled.
What do you need from me on the day?
The oven switched off and cool when we arrive, a working socket, and somewhere for the team to park.
Can you clean the hob or the extractor at the same visit?
Yes. A ceramic hob is £23, a gas hob £28 and an extractor hood £28, added to the oven price.
