Much of what is now called Maida Hill was first planned as St Peter's Park, a suburb projected by 1865 north of Harrow Road on land that had been Westminster Abbey's Westbourne manor.
St Peter's Park terraces, cut into flats
Sir John Neeld granted the first 99-year leases in 1865, for three-storey terraced houses over basements along the north side of Harrow Road and in Marylands Road. Edward Vigers, who nominated the first lessees, had to construct the roads, the sewers and a bridge over the canal, and more than a quarter of the builders on the estate failed between 1870 and 1872. In the 1880s Walterton Road was described as a dreary street of small grey houses approached by tall flights of steps. By the 1890s the houses were mostly of nine rooms and might be let to two or three families.
Formal conversion came later. Between 1965 and 1973 Mulberry Housing Trust converted about 270 properties in north Paddington into about 950 flats. In Harrow Road ward, which covers Walterton Road and its neighbours, 40.7% of households lived in a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census, the highest share of any Westminster ward, and 34.0% rented from a housing association, also the highest.
A flat inside one of these terraces usually has a small kitchen with a slim freestanding cooker or a built-in single, and steps or stairs between it and the pavement. The racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are done by hand in the kitchen, on dust sheets, and the door is split where its design allows.
The Elgin estate off Chippenham Road
The triangle between Harrow Road, Elgin Avenue and Chippenham Road held some of Paddington's worst housing when the Greater London Council earmarked it in 1966 for 300 maisonettes and flats. Parking either side of Chippenham Road
Chippenham Road is the line between two of Westminster's parking sub-zones. Lanhill Road, Grittleton Road and the streets to the east are C1; Walterton Road, Fernhead Road and the streets to the west are C2. Both follow zone C's hours, which the council's March 2026 table gives as 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, for paid bays and single yellow lines alike.
The council has no on-street visitor permit scheme, so a weekday visit means a paid bay for the van. Maida Hill Market, at the junction of Elgin Avenue and Harrow Road, trades on Friday and Saturday from 8am to 6pm, and the square around it was rebuilt with pedestrian-priority space, so on market days a van needs a side street.

My flat is up the front steps and two more flights. Is that a problem?
No. It adds carrying time, nothing else. Mention the floor when you book so the slot is long enough.
Can a housing association be invoiced for the clean?
Yes. If the association or a letting agent is paying, the invoice is made out to them, and photos of the finished oven can go on file.

Said after the sign-off
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
