Morden Cemetery on Lower Morden Lane opened on 17 March 1891 as Battersea New Cemetery, after the Battersea Burial Board bought 127 acres of Hobald's Farm. The London Gardens Trust records Wandsworth Council as its owner.

Garth Road and the streets off it

South of the cemetery lay Morden Common, which the London Gardens Trust says was reputedly common land from Saxon times until the early 20th century. In 1926 the local council bought land there for the Merton and Sutton Joint Cemetery, which opened in 1947. Garth Road is named after the Garth family, lords of the manor of Morden from the 16th century. One resident, in a booklet from Merton Historical Society, remembers two blocks of 19th-century cottages in Garth Road towards the London Road end, with fields opposite. A photograph in Merton's archive, dated about 1930, shows houses under construction along Garth Road from the point where the Pyl Brook crosses under it. The brook runs behind those houses and is the boundary between Merton and Sutton.

Today part of Garth Road is industrial: the Garth Road estate, with Merton's reuse and recycling centre on Amenity Way. The streets off it include Salcombe Drive and Dunster Avenue. In the Census area that covers them (Merton 025D) there were 506 households in 2021. 64.7% lived in a terraced house and 21.7% in a semi. 83.0% owned their home (34.0% outright), and fewer than one in a hundred rented from a council or housing association.

Kitchens in a terraced house

A terraced house that has stayed with its owners may well have a refitted kitchen at the back, with the hob set into the worktop near the oven. If the hob wants doing too, it can be added to the same visit. The two kinds are priced differently:

Gas hob
Burners, caps and cast-iron pan supports over a steel or glass top; £28
Ceramic hob
A flat sheet of glass over heating elements, with no loose parts; £23

For the oven, racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand on dust sheets. The door is split where its design allows. The hob cleaning page says more about both kinds.

Parking on Garth Road and the side streets

Garth Road, Salcombe Drive, Dunster Avenue and Lower Morden Lane do not appear on Merton's April 2026 list of roads in controlled parking zones. That means no zone hours, though any yellow lines and signs still count, and Garth Road also carries traffic for the industrial estate and the recycling centre. Hillcross Avenue to the north is a different case: it is on the list, in zones CH and M4. Give us the street and house number, and say if there is room on the drive.

Lower Morden oven cleaning questions

Is my Garth Road house in Merton or Sutton?

Merton. The Pyl Brook behind the Garth Road houses marks the edge of the borough; the streets beyond it, towards North Cheam and Stonecot Hill, are in Sutton. The oven price is the same either side.

Can the hob be cleaned at the same visit?

Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic hob £23, on top of the oven price.

How long does a double oven take?

About two hours. A single is about 90 minutes.

Can you come on a Sunday?

Yes. We work seven days a week, and weekends are charged at the weekday price.

Arrived promptly and did a great job cleaning the oven, hob and extractor. They look like new now and for a very reasonable price too.

I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
