The station now called Edmonton Green was named Lower Edmonton (High Level) from 1883 and plain Lower Edmonton from 1939, until it became Edmonton Green on 28 September 1992.
From one-hearth cottages to 1880s building on Bury Street
Lower Edmonton is one of the parish's oldest settlements. The Victoria County History counts 101 dwellings there in 1801, gathered round the green at the junction with Church Street. The Bury Street ward, in the north of the parish and away from the turnpike roads, stayed the most rural part: it had 301 houses in 1851, against 169 in 1664, when it held an unusually large number of one-hearth cottages.
Most of the building came late in the century. Houses were going up on Hertford Road in 1878, westward along Bury Street in 1881 and 1886, and on the Millbrook estate to the south-west in 1882. At the 2021 Census, Lower Edmonton ward had 5,826 households, and 41.6% of them lived in a terraced house; 26.3% were in a purpose-built block of flats.
A small terraced house of the 1880s usually has a narrow back kitchen, and the cooker is often freestanding, with the hob on top and the oven below. On the day, the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, the fan cover and the glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split if its design allows.
A ward where renting matches owning
In 2021, 35.7% of Lower Edmonton ward's households owned their home and 35.0% rented privately, almost the same share; another 27.9% rented from the council or a housing association. With over a third of homes let privately, a lot of ovens here get looked at by an inventory clerk.

Parking on Croyland Road and Balham Road
In summer 2025 Enfield consulted on an Edmonton Green North zone for the streets bounded by Balham Road, Croyland Road and Hertford Road, with permit bays from 9am to 6.30pm every day. After the responses came in, the council decided not to go ahead. On the council's zone boundary file as archived in December 2022, Bury Street, Croyland Road, Balham Road and Millbrook Road were all outside any zone. Lower Edmonton oven cleaning questions
Is Lower Edmonton the same place as Edmonton Green?
They overlap. The old village of Lower Edmonton grew round the green, and the shopping centre and towers built there from the 1960s have their own Edmonton Green page. This page covers the streets to the north, around Bury Street, Croyland Road and Millbrook Road.
Can you do the hob on top of a freestanding cooker as well?
Yes, at the same visit. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic one £23, added to the oven price.
How long will a freestanding single take?
About 90 minutes. A double takes about two hours, after which the oven is heated and you check it.
