In 1944 John Maitland sold 644 acres of Loughton to the London County Council, and the Debden estate built on that land had 4,321 dwellings by 1953. Loughton is the largest town in Epping Forest district, with 33,346 residents in the parish at the 2021 Census.
Loughton's two halves: the Debden estate and the Hills
Debden was built as London overspill, to ease crowding in the capital and replace homes lost in the war. Its shops are on The Broadway, a parade of mainly family-run shops with a small weekly market. Building had gone on steadily between the wars too, with new streets such as Priory Road, Brooklyn Avenue, Brook Road, Tycehurst Hill and Spareleaze Hill.
The Hills are the older end. The York Hill conservation area, designated in 1977, runs from Church Hill to Baldwins Hill, and the district council describes it as steep hills, weatherboarded houses, narrow lanes and high hedges, with Victorian homes ranging from small terraced cottages to large mansions. Its highest point, by Ash Green House on Baldwins Hill, is 87 metres above sea level.
The census figures for the two ends hardly overlap. In Loughton Broadway ward, around The Broadway shops, 1.9% of households lived in a detached house in 2021 and 37.3% rented from the council or a housing association. In Loughton St John's ward, which takes in York Hill and Baldwins Hill, 32.9% lived in a detached house, 82.6% owned their home and 1.7% rented socially.

Kitchens follow the same split. A cottage-estate house of the late 1940s may well have a small separate kitchen, and where it has not been knocked through the cooker may be freestanding. A large house on the Hills is more likely to have a double oven or a range. Either way the trays, racks and runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are cleaned by hand indoors.
Range cookers in the larger Loughton houses
A range is priced by width, and its hob or hood can be added to the same visit:
- 90cm range cooker
- Often two ovens side by side, or one wide oven and a narrow one, under a wide hob. £143, two to three hours on site.
- 100cm range
- The larger size, £167.
- Range hob or hood
- £48 for the hob or the hood above the range.

Narrow lanes, permit bays and where the van stops
On the Hills the roads were laid out before cars. The district council's York Hill appraisal notes that many stretches have no pavement, that the way through from York Hill to Baldwins Hill is closed to motor traffic, and that York Hill is busiest at school start and finishing times. Tell us on the phone which end of the lane or drive the van should use.
Elsewhere, the North Essex Parking Partnership has been adding small resident permit zones, street by street, where commuters park. Pyrles Green became zone LPG3 on 4 August 2025, and in April 2026 the partnership proposed running zone L1 (Ladyfields, Colson Road and Lushes Road, near Debden station) from 8am to 8pm every day. If you live in a zone, a digital visitor stay of 6 hours covers a single, a double or a range. The district council's car parks in the town include Traps Hill and Smarts Lane, both long stay.

Said after the sign-off
Nice hardworking lads that always do a good job. We used them for our old flat when moving out and for the new one now, both jobs were done very professionally. My wife is very impressed with the results and would recommend them to friends and family.
I would certainly recommend this service, very efficient and good value for money. The young man did a great job and even cleaned the kitchen floor. Thank you.
Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
