Longlands straddles the boundaries of three London boroughs, Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich, which is why one small place needs three postcode districts to describe it and why neighbours a few doors apart can be paying council tax to different authorities. Most of it falls in Bexley's Longlands ward, with the southern end in Bromley's Chislehurst ward. Some old maps write the name as two words, Long Lands.
The 1930s built almost all of it
New Ideal Homesteads Ltd and firms like it bought up land here that had been part of the older great estates, cut it into plots and ran road after road of affordable commuter housing across it. Longlands Park Crescent and Park Hill Road came out of that push. The kitchens were laid out for a family and a back door, not for an island, so what we usually find is one oven under the counter, a hob over it and an extractor that has been running for a decade. The extractor hood in a kitchen of that vintage is worth doing at the same visit, and extractor hood cleaning is £28.
The by-pass is no use to us
The A20 Sidcup By-Pass Road runs through as a dual carriageway and the A211 crosses it. You cannot unload a van on either. Everything comes in from the side roads instead. Buses 233 and 321 serve the area, the nearest stations are New Eltham and Sidcup on the Dartford Loop, which opened on 1 September 1866, and Queen Mary's Hospital sits at the Longlands end of Sidcup. Tell us the road, not the postcode. Three districts overlap here and the postcode alone is a poor guide.
What happens in the ninety minutes
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and go into a heated dip tank in the van. Cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors with non-caustic products. The oven is heat-tested and signed off before we leave. There is no call-out fee inside the North and South Circular and no surcharge for a DA postcode.
