Longford grew up at a ford on the River Colne, and its name is said to come from its great length: the village stretches along the old Bath Road from the first bridge at Harmondsworth almost to Colnbrook.

In the Census output area that covers the Bath Road, Heathrow Close and the flats at Kings Court and Blacksmiths Court, 60.4% of its households (about 150) rented privately in 2021, and 39.3% lived in purpose-built flats. Across Hillingdon the private-rented share was 25.9%.

On 25 November 2025 the government said Heathrow Airport Limited's north-west runway proposal would be the scheme taken forward for a review of the airport policy statement, and that this was not a final decision on a third runway. The draft Heathrow Expansion National Policy Statement went out to consultation from 18 June to 1 September 2026. It does not grant consent for any scheme, and the government expects a decision on any planning application in the first half of 2029. The draft says the applicant will be expected to offer 125% of market value, plus taxes and reasonable moving costs, to owner-occupiers inside the compulsory acquisition zone and inside a further voluntary purchase zone that includes the area known as the Heathrow Villages.
A nearer change is noise. In December 2025 the council's planning committee agreed to grant permission, subject to a legal agreement, for works that let Heathrow alternate its runways on easterly days, including a new, larger noise barrier in Longford.
