Essex Road and Kent Road, between Station Road and Fawkham Road, stand on land that a Gravesend brewer's son sold on Christmas Eve 1883 to the Kent and Essex House Land and General Investment Company, a Gravesend firm founded that year to build houses or sell plots.
Longfield's streets, from 1899 to the 1960s
Neither road is on the 1895 Ordnance Survey map. The oldest house on Essex Road, No. 48, was built by Albert High in 1899, and by 1907 the map shows rows of cottages along both sides; in 1911 the frontagers paid to have the road made up. Kent Road filled more slowly. Its village hall, open by 1927, closed on the last day of 1969.
The station is older than both. It opened in June 1872 as Fawkham, became Longfield for Fawkham & Hartley in June 1961 and plain Longfield by the end of that decade. Shops went up on Station Road in 1960, 1963 and 1964, and the parade at 9-23 dates from 1972-73. On Northdown Road, Cooper Estates won an appeal to the Minister in 1963 after the rural district council refused permission; the cul-de-sac has 86 houses, 84 of them semis, on part of a field called Pond Down, and nearly all were finished and sold in 1964 and 1965.
Building has carried on since. Of about 860 homes on the council-tax list for the small census area that covers the village, some 240 were built in 2000 or later (Valuation Office, March 2025). A new home usually has an integrated oven, sometimes a pyrolytic one. The clean is the same for all of them: racks and trays come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, then the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors.
