Long Ditton is in Elmbridge, in Surrey, just outside Greater London. The St Mary's Road side of the village borders the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, and Surbiton starts across the line.
Long Ditton's interwar streets
Elmbridge's design and character guide says much of Long Ditton was built between the wars. The exceptions are older: Kings Road was laid out and partly built by about 1900, and the Fleece Road shopping parade was there by 1920. St Mary's Church itself was built in 1880 to a design by G.E. Street and is listed Grade II. It sits in the Long Ditton conservation area, designated on 23 November 1994, with the Grade II remains of the earlier church and the locally listed Manor House.

St James Park, on the old waterworks filter beds
North of Effingham Road, whose large late Victorian and Edwardian houses run to two and a half storeys with bays and gables, St James Park was built in the late 20th century over the filter beds of the old Lambeth and Chelsea waterworks. It is a private estate of three-storey townhouses with integral garages and neo-Georgian flats round a landscaped square with a fountain. The Lambeth waterworks engine house and pump house nearby are listed Grade II.
