London Field was recorded from 1540, at first in the singular, and was perhaps named from lying at the London end of Hackney's busiest local road.
Railway streets on the east side of the Fields
The Great Eastern's raised railway opened in 1872 and cut north between Mare Street and the Fields, with a station on what was then Grosvenor Terrace, renamed Mentmore Terrace in 1878. Crowded terraces filled the ground round it. The west side of Tower Street, now Martello Street, had been let for building in 1856; Ellingfort Road was named in 1878 and Gransden Avenue in 1880.
Workshops followed the houses. The railway arches were expected to attract them, Silesia Buildings, off Gransden Avenue, took its name in 1906, and by 1928 houses in Mentmore Terrace were being turned into workshops. The Victoria County History found the London Lane industrial area run down in 1993, with nearly all the arches blocked up and many Victorian houses derelict or cleared for yards. The 2021 Census shows the change: in the census area round Martello Street and Gransden Avenue (LSOA Hackney 023F), 70.9% of the 1,102 households lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 10.1% in part of another converted building, the Census category for a former school, church or warehouse.
A flat in a converted or newly built block may well have a fitted kitchen with a built-in single oven in a tall unit or under the worktop. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
Linked pairs behind Broadway Market
Broadway Market follows an old route that carried Hackney produce to the City's markets. Part of it was named Duncan Place by 1811, became part of the Broadway in 1881 and was renamed Broadway Market in 1937; Hackney made it a conservation area in 1995. Behind it, Dericote Street and Croston Street have early 19th-century linked pairs of two storeys over basements, now listed grade II. The two streets began as George and John streets, were renamed Hamburg and Bremen, and took their present names in 1918.

London Fields ward in the 2021 Census
The ward had 5,584 households. 41.9% rented from the council or a housing association, 29.4% rented privately, 25.1% owned and 3.3% were in shared ownership. Most (58.5%) lived in purpose-built flats; 16.1% had a terraced house and 3.7% lived in part of another converted building.

Zone J, and the Saturday subzone round Broadway Market
Martello Street, Mentmore Terrace, London Lane and London Fields West Side are in zone J (Queensbridge), controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. Broadway Market and the streets round it, such as Ada Street, Welshpool Street and Sheep Lane, are in the subzone that the council's zone list runs Monday to Saturday over the same hours. Sunday is outside both.

For parking, Sunday is better: the market streets are controlled on Saturdays and not on Sundays. Weekend visits cost the same as weekdays.
