St Mary the Virgin on Church Road is mainly 12th century and listed Grade I. The Victoria County History lists it as the only pre-19th-century building left in the old parish of Little Ilford.
Most of Little Ilford was built between 1890 and 1910
In the 19th century this was the smallest parish in Becontree hundred: 768 acres between East Ham and the River Roding, thinly populated until about 1850 and mostly farmland in 1839. Charles Bartholomew, the main landowner, died early in 1895, and building on the Manor House Estate began the next year. The manor house stood near where Dersingham Avenue now meets Church Road, and it had gone by 1901.
Not all of it was built well. The county history records poor building on the Manor farm estate between 1895 and 1899, and says parts of Grantham, Alverstone and Walton Roads soon became slums; in 1966 they were being redeveloped. Newham's parking schedule now lists four blocks off Grantham Road (Charlbury, Willis, Arthur Walls and Blakesley Houses) and Susan Lawrence House on Walton Road. Jack Cornwell Street and John Cornwell VC House, a block of council flats, are named after the boy VC who went to Walton Road School.
So the oven is in a terraced house, many of them from that building boom, or in a flat in a block. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand. Dust sheets go down first.

The ward had 5,062 households. 36.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 36.1% in a terraced house. Renting from the council was far more common than next door: 23.1% of households here, against 11.5% in Manor Park ward. Another 35.6% rented privately and 33.2% owned their home.

Parking in Newham's Little Ilford zone
Newham has 31 resident parking zones, and with five industrial zones they cover the whole borough. This ward's streets are in the Little Ilford zone, which the council lists as controlled Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. Its pay-by-phone bays have different limits, and the limit matters for the van:

- most side roads, among them Sheringham Avenue, Wolferton Road and the access roads to the Grantham Road blocks

A single oven takes about 90 minutes and a double about 2 hours; a 90cm range takes 2 to 3. Sunday is outside the zone's hours, and a weekend visit costs the same as a weekday one. Newham asks drivers to check the signs on the street itself, so tell us the road when you call.

The old parish is now usually called Manor Park, a name first used in the 19th century for the suburb by Manor Park station. Newham still uses Little Ilford for a ward and a parking zone, both east of Manor Park's. West of them is Manor Park itself, at the same prices.
