Little Heath was written down in 1369 as Lytel Ylleford heth, the little heath of Ilford. In 1650 the hamlets and farms along the forest edge in the north of Ilford parish were said to hold 100 families, and the county history names Barkingside and Little Heath as the main settlements there.
Little Heath, between Barley Lane and Chadwell Heath Lane
There is no official boundary. The name sits on the map where the road called Little Heath meets Chadwell Heath Lane, with Little Heath School on Hainault Road just to the north. It is Redbridge, and the streets around it fall in three wards (Seven Kings, Chadwell and Aldborough), even though the post town is Romford. The Marks Gate estate, in Barking and Dagenham, is about a mile to the east.
The big neighbour is Goodmayes Hospital on Barley Lane, in Redbridge, which West Ham opened as its borough asylum in August 1901 on the site of Blue House Farm. In 1908 West Ham bought the Heath House estate, where Major G. E. Ibbetson had built a chapel in 1862, to extend the hospital, and in the early 1990s part of the site was released for King George Hospital. The county history, published in 1966, records 19th-century stock-brick cottages beside the small village green at Little Heath. Today the EL3 bus from Barking Riverside ends its run here.
Owners and semis to the east, more renting to the south-west
The two sides of the junction look different in the 2021 Census, and both areas are in Redbridge. To the east, the small census area around Chafford Way, Tendring Way and Freshwell Avenue (streets that share their names with old Essex hundreds) had 641 households: 55.9% lived in a semi-detached house and 80.1% owned their home, 37.6% outright. To the south-west, the census area that reaches the west end of Little Heath road had 872 households, 31.8% of them in a purpose-built flat; 30.5% rented privately and 20.3% from a social landlord.
A semi usually has its kitchen at the back, and once that has been extended there is room for a double oven or a 90cm range. A flat more often has a built-in single under the worktop. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors. The door comes apart where its design allows.

Zone Chadwell Heath C runs every day
On Redbridge's permit zone map, zone Chadwell Heath C is a small zone at the junction, covering stretches of Chadwell Heath Lane and the eastern end of Little Heath road. It is controlled from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday, so a weekend booking does not get round it. Chafford Way, Tendring Way, Glandford Way, Norwich Crescent and the Barley Lane stretch by the hospitals were outside every zone on the map.
Inside the zone the van needs one of your visitor permits. Redbridge posts them to you within 10 working days and each is valid for one day, so order them well before the visit. The team needs somewhere to park; the signs on your road have the final word.

Little Heath is Redbridge; Romford is only the post town. East of Little Heath the boundary with Barking and Dagenham runs through RM6, and the Chadwell page covers the Redbridge streets further south. The prices are the same on both sides.
We are on Little Heath road, inside zone C. Is a Sunday easier?
Not for parking, as zone C is controlled every day from 7am to 7pm. Have a visitor permit ready for whichever day you book.

Two to three hours, at £143. A double oven takes about 2 hours.
Can the hob be cleaned on the same visit?
Yes. A gas hob is £28 and a ceramic or induction hob £23, added to the oven price.
