The Fisherton Street Estate went up in 1924 on land given by Viscount Portman: seven red-brick blocks set round two courtyards, built for St Marylebone Borough Council as part of the 'Homes for Heroes' drive after the First World War.
Council flats off Church Street
Every flat on the estate had its own bathroom and toilet, and hot water came from one central boiler, both new practice in social housing at the time. The blocks replaced terraced streets (Salisbury, now Fisherton, Capland and North, now Frampton) in an area whose terraces had become notorious slums by the late 19th century. The 1960s brought more change: many old terraces in the area were replaced by estates of larger blocks, and Westway cut across Burne Street and Lisson Street.
Church Street ward is now almost entirely flats. Of its 4,547 households at the 2021 Census, 4,043 lived in a purpose-built block. Only 13.7% owned their home, the lowest share of any Westminster ward, while 39.9% rented straight from the council and 18.4% from a housing association.
A flat in a 1920s or 1960s block usually has a compact kitchen with a freestanding cooker or a built-in single under the worktop. Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
