Limehouse is named after the lime kilns at Limekiln Dock, where chalk brought in from Kent was being burnt for London's builders by the fourteenth century.
Narrow Street: Georgian houses and warehouse flats
The late seventeenth and eighteenth-century houses on Narrow Street are among the few of their kind left in Limehouse; The Grapes stands at the end of the Georgian terrace. Behind them, the small warehouses of Dunbar Wharf on Limekiln Dock, early nineteenth century and named after the shipbuilders Duncan Dunbar and Sons, keep their loading doors and cast-iron windows and are now homes. The council's appraisal for the conservation area, designated in December 1975, says council housing was once 95% of the housing in the Limehouse area; several of the small warehouses became homes after the London Docklands Development Corporation took over in 1981, and the road scheme of 1989 to 1993 put through traffic in a tunnel beneath Limehouse Basin, easing the pressure on Narrow Street.
A kitchen fitted into a converted warehouse often has one run of units with an integrated oven. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand in the flat.
Either side of Commercial Road
North of Commercial Road is the Locksley Estate, a council estate. Its newest block is Chris Braithwaite House, 17 council flats for social rent, five to eight storeys high, officially opened on 31 July 2023 on a previously unused plot known locally as the Limehouse Triangle. A tenancy usually ends with an inventory check, and the oven is one of the things on it. Letting agents can have the invoice addressed to the agency, ask for photos for the checkout file and arrange a key pick-up for an empty flat.

Parking zones C4 and B3, and the Commercial Road red route
Narrow Street, Limehouse Basin, St Anne's church and Three Colt Street are in the council's sub-zone C4; north of Commercial Road, Salmon Lane and the Locksley Estate streets are in B3. Tower Hamlets lists both as controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Commercial Road between them is part of the A13 red route, where the lines and signs decide where anything can stop. Can the van park on Narrow Street?
On a weekday it needs a bay in zone C4 near your door, or a space in your building's car park if the management allows it. C4 is not controlled at weekends.
My warehouse flat has the oven built into a run of units. Is that a problem?
It does not change the method. The racks, shelves and runners come out of the oven to be soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity is cleaned by hand where it sits.
