Thornhill Road, south of St Mary's church, shows how it happened. The British Land Company bought the Leyton Grange manor house in 1860 and pulled it down the next year. After 1945 Leyton's council built flats: Beaumont House in 1947, Mills Court in 1950 and Thornhill Gardens in 1955, on the bombed east end of Thornhill Road. The eleven-storey Slade Tower followed in 1961, and later blocks went up to 17 storeys.
