Lessness turns up in the Domesday Book in 1086 as the largest settlement in the Hundred of Litlelee, with 68 households counted. The heath itself was the high ground south-east of the abbey, and the abbey took its name from it rather than the other way round. Lesnes Abbey was founded in 1178 and shut by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525 under a licence to suppress houses with fewer than seven inmates.
