Lisle Street, behind the north side of Leicester Square, was built in two goes: the western half in 1682-3 over part of the garden of Leicester House, and the eastern end after the banker Thomas Wright bought Leicester House in 1791 or 1792 and extended the street east as New Lisle Street.
Who lives round Leicester Square
The square itself is given over to cinemas, hotels and its garden; the homes are on the side streets. The census area that covers Leicester Square, Chinatown and the streets east to St Martin's Lane had 1,003 households in 2021. Of those, 11.9% lived in a commercial building, meaning, for example, a home over a shop, in an office building or in a hotel; across Westminster the figure was 2.1%. Just over half (52.6%) rented privately and almost a third (32.5%) were social tenants.
Some of that social housing is old. On Charing Cross Road, north of Leicester Square station, Sandringham Buildings went up in 1883-4 as artisans' dwellings for 900 people above a row of shops, and the Prince and Princess of Wales opened them in July 1884. Soho Housing manages Sandringham Flats on Charing Cross Road; in the output area on the east side of the road there, 94 of 120 households rented from a housing association or other social landlord at the last census.
Closer to the square, in the output area round Leicester Place, the east end of Lisle Street and Cranbourn Street, 86.0% of the 157 households rented privately. When a tenancy ends there, the inventory clerk opens the oven. Agencies can have the invoice in their own name, photos for the checkout file, and keys for an empty flat collected and returned by arrangement.

The van and the pedestrian square
The square has been closed to traffic since the 1980s, so the van parks in the streets around it. The removable parts (racks, trays, side runners) come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, while the oven interior, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, over dust sheets.
Leicester Square is in Westminster's zone G. The council's tariff table for March 2026 has paid bays and single yellow lines controlled 8.30am to 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday, and resident bays controlled all day, every day. Westminster does not run an on-street visitor permit scheme, and the council points visitors to its pay-to-park bays. On Sundays the paid bays are not controlled, and a Sunday visit costs the weekday price. Gerrard Street and the rest of Chinatown are just north.

Can the agent check the oven when it is finished?
The oven is put back together and heated before we leave, and you or the agent can look inside it lit. If a corner is not right when you inspect it, we put it right before we leave.
I live in Sandringham Flats. Do I need to do anything first?
Have the oven cool when we arrive and a working socket free, and tell us the floor when you book.

Very satisfied with the service. They were slightly late at first but I got a call from customer service to let me know, and it was all fine. The oven man, as he called himself, arrived and worked very hard for a couple of hours. My oven now looks like it has never been used.
