Leamouth's homes are nearly all new flats
People have lived here before. The Survey of London records 19 brick cottages at Leamouth Place, put up in the late 1820s by the shipbuilder Richard Green, and says some 300 people moved out in 1936 when the London County Council cleared the Orchard Place slums. What stands now is recent. London City Island, on the northern peninsula, has 1,706 homes in brightly coloured blocks by Glenn Howells Architects, finished in August 2020, and 89% of them are private. English National Ballet moved its headquarters onto the island in September 2019. On the southern peninsula Ballymore's Goodluck Hope, which the developer puts at 841 homes, turns an old dockyard into warehouse-style blocks close to Trinity Buoy Wharf, where the lighthouse built between 1864 and 1866 is London's only surviving one.
The 2021 Census shows how complete the change is. In the census area the House of Commons Library names Leamouth (Tower Hamlets 034, which also takes in Virginia Quay and the streets off Leamouth Road) there were 2,918 households, and 96.9% of them lived in a purpose-built block of flats. Only 1.4% had a terraced house.

Renting on the Leamouth peninsula

The red footbridge from Canning Town station lands on London City Island, but it is for people and bikes, so the van has to find a road. Both peninsulas sit in Tower Hamlets parking zone D1, controlled Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, with no bay controls on public holidays. The council's zone rules cover public roads only; private land and streets such as council estates have other restrictions. Tell us the block name and where a van can stop when you book. They come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, then go back in when the oven is reassembled, heated and checked with you before the team leaves.
