Between 1905 and 1914, several hundred two-storey red-brick houses with projecting bay windows went up in the south-west corner of the St Quintin estate, east of Latimer Road and north of where the Westway now runs.

The Survey of London lists the streets: Highlever Road, Kelfield Gardens, St Quintin Avenue, Finstock Road, Balliol Road, Wallingford Avenue, Kingsbridge Road and the western end of Oxford Gardens. E. T. Daley and A. S. Franklin built most of them, with a few other firms. The houses were modest, about twenty feet wide on plots roughly a hundred feet deep, and they have no basements.
No basement usually means the kitchen sits on the ground floor at the back, which is the easy end of an oven job. Many of these houses are no longer single homes. In St Helen's ward, which takes in the estate, 48.6% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house at the 2021 Census, the highest share of any ward in Kensington and Chelsea. In a split house the upstairs flat has its own kitchen, generally small, with a built-in single or a slim freestanding cooker.
Upstairs or down, the oven is stripped in the kitchen on dust sheets. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; the cavity, the fan cover and the door glass are degreased by hand indoors, and the door is split where its design allows.
Housing association flats and the walkway blocks
The same ward shows who owns the houses. In 2021, 46.3% of households rented from a social landlord: 40.6% from a housing association, a share beaten in the borough only by Dalgarno ward next door. Just 28.8% owned their home.
South of the Westway, round Latimer Road station, is Notting Dale ward, where 79.4% of households lived in a purpose-built block in 2021. On 23 March 2021 the council announced grants of more than £20 million for carbon-neutral retrofits on the Lancaster West estate, saying 569 homes would benefit; 367 of them are in Barandon, Hurstway and Testerton Walk. The potential improvements it listed include triple-glazed windows, non-combustible roof and wall insulation, renewable heating and new ventilation systems. Its annual report to tenants for 2023-24 said works on the walkways and at Treadgold House were under way. On 28 May 2026 the council's Leadership Team awarded a £74.8 million contract to refurbish Barandon, Hurstway and Testerton Walks, with a programme of 162 weeks.

Parking on either side of the Westway
The streets round Latimer Road all fall in one band of Kensington and Chelsea's residents' parking map: residents' bays are controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and until 1.30pm on Saturdays. In those hours a visiting van pays at a pay-by-phone bay. Close to the southern end of Latimer Road, the streets to the west belong to Hammersmith and Fulham and follow its rules.
