Latimer Road station and Latimer Road the street sit about 500 metres apart, on opposite sides of the Westway, the street to the north and the station to the south. They were closer once. Building the elevated A40 took out the middle section of the road, and the stranded southern end was renamed as part of Freston Road, which is the reason the name on the roundel does not lead you to the address on the booking.
The area is estates first and terraces second
This is North Kensington rather than anything Notting Hill, and the housing is mostly social. The Lancaster West Estate is immediately east of the station, 795 homes across a 28-acre site, designed in 1967 and built between 1972 and 1981 as low-rise walkway blocks with taller ones among them. The Silchester Estate lies west of the railway. Blechynden, Silchester, Walmer, Testerton and Bramley run off the same stretch. Kitchens in that stock are compact, the cooker usually a freestanding single or an integrated under-counter oven, so most bookings here are a standard oven clean at £77.
The tank stays in the van
Racks, shelves, trays and side runners lift out and soak in a heated dip tank in the van. Indoors it is hand work, the cavity and fan cover and door glass degreased with non-caustic products, nothing left to smell once we have gone. On a walkway block the parts make the trip out and the chemicals never come in. The oven is heat-tested before we leave.
Everything caustic stays outside the front door.
Kensington parking does not work like the rest of London
Kensington and Chelsea is not carved into zones the way the neighbouring boroughs are, so a resident permit parks anywhere in the borough. Residents park free in pay-by-phone bays from 5.30pm to 9.30am Monday to Saturday and pay between 9.30am and 5.30pm. Bay hours still change street by street. The signs are the thing to read, not the map.
