The Larks in Larkswood probably comes from a family, not a bird. Thomas Laverk turns up in the subsidy rolls of 1319, and the wood carries the name still. This ground sat in the Manor of Chingford Earls, which Henry VIII took in 1544, and Larks Wood itself is semi-ancient woodland left from the far bigger tract that once took in Epping Forest, hilly, oak and hornbeam, with bluebells that drew crowds out here in the early twentieth century.
The lido took 2,500 bathers
Chingford Borough Council laid out Larkswood Park in 1936 on the site of Larks Farm, putting an open-air pool in it at a cost of £24,000, built for racing and water polo with room for 2,500. Sir Kingsley Wood, then Minister of Health, opened it on 28 July 1936. Cross-shaped, reckoned the biggest lido in London at over seven acres with the grass around it, it even hosted It's A Knockout. It closed in 1987. FantaSeas took the site in 1990 and lasted two years, then it lay derelict until the leisure centre opened on New Road in 2001.
Suburban houses, extended kitchens
The streets between the wood and New Road went up mostly between 1930 and 1939, and Larkswood Road is a fair sample. Kitchens in that stock run to a stacked double at £110 and about two hours, or a built-in single at £77 in ninety minutes. An extractor hood is £28, filters and canopy, in the same visit.
