Between 1928 and 1934 the London County Council cleared China Walk and the courts behind it and built six five-storey blocks on about five acres: 238 flats for nearly 1,500 people, a short walk south of Lambeth North station. Each block is named after a British china maker, so the addresses read Wedgwood House, Worcester House, Derby House.

In 1938 Lambeth Walk had 159 shops, 11 of them butchers, and the street market that the song made famous. Bombing and post-war clearance changed that. The west side was cleared and rebuilt as council blocks, and before the new flats went up the empty site was the outdoor set for Passport to Pimlico. The market faded, and in 1998 Lambeth made the surviving east side, mostly three-storey Victorian and Edwardian terraces with old shop fronts, a conservation area together with the China Walk Estate.
North of Lambeth Road the streets around the station are different again. Hercules Road, where William Blake lived at 13 Hercules Buildings, runs north from Lambeth Road. Lambeth North station, at the corner of Westminster Bridge Road and Baylis Road, opened in 1906 as Kennington Road and was renamed three times before it settled on its present name around 1928.

The census area the House of Commons Library calls Lambeth Walk & North Kennington had 4,054 households in 2021. Just over half, 52.7%, rented from a social landlord: 33.6% from the council and 19.1% from a housing association. A fifth, 20.4%, rented privately and 25.6% owned. 78.1% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 11.5% in a terraced house.

Lambeth's parking FAQ says the hours of each controlled zone are shown on the "Controlled Zone" signs as you drive in, and normally cover the single yellow lines and permit bays inside it, though a bay can carry its own times, so check the signs when you park.
