Laleham Abbey, from Lucan seat to flats
In 1803 much of the land in and around Laleham became the seat of the Earl of Lucan. The house the family built south of the village, now called Laleham Abbey, went up in 1803-06 to designs by J. B. Papworth for the 2nd Earl and is listed Grade II*; its stair hall has a copy of Thorvaldsen's frieze of Alexander's triumph. The family also gave the land for the National School on the Broadway. The 7th Earl sold the house in 1966, and in 1981 it was divided into apartments. Abbey Mews, a quadrangular mid-19th-century block, has been converted around a cloister garth with two-storey accommodation, and much of the old park is now Laleham Park, public parkland.
Flats made inside a house of 1803-06 have kitchens fitted at the conversion or since, so the oven is normally built in, a single or a double. Expect a flight of stairs between some of them and the van, so mention the floor when you call.
Cottages and terraces on the lanes to the river
Spelthorne's 2024 appraisal of the conservation area, first designated in December 1971, describes the village as a set of lanes running from the main road to the Thames. Blacksmith's Lane has small detached cottages on its north side, several with an Arts and Crafts touch. Terraced houses lined the south side of Vicarage Lane by 1914, when Condor Road had been cut through the grounds of the old Osmanthorpe estate. On Thames Side the houses face the river, and many keep a weatherboarded boathouse, now often a shed or a garage.
In the Census area that covers the village centre and Abbey Drive (Spelthorne 012A), 34.8% of the 607 households lived in a terrace in 2021, 30.8% in a detached house and 14.0% in a purpose-built block of flats. 13.2% rented from a social landlord: 12.0% a housing association or similar and 1.2% the council.

Parking on the Broadway and down the lanes
The same appraisal calls Blacksmith's Lane a narrow single lane with walls and houses right up to its edge, ending at an informal turning area by the river, and notes that Condor Road has a surface of compacted earth and aggregate. The Broadway is wide enough for on-street parking, with laybys, and a public car park on the east side, on part of the old allotment ground. If you live down one of the lanes, say so when you book, and check the signs on your road; the team needs somewhere to park near your door.
