The Three Horseshoes at 25 Shepperton Road appears as a building on John Norden's map of 1623, and part of it was in use as an inn by 1624. It is one of three pubs in a village of about 4,800 people, with The Feathers of 1796 and The Turk's Head of 1867. Laleham was Middlesex until 1965, and its post town is Staines-upon-Thames, hence the TW18 postcode on a Spelthorne village.
The Lucan estate paid for most of what stands here
The Third Earl of Lucan gave the land for Laleham C of E School, opened 1865; the Fourth Earl gave the recreation ground land in 1907. School Cottages of 1873 still carry the Lucan coats of arms in their brickwork, and the Earls are buried at the east end of All Saints churchyard, near Matthew Arnold's grave. Church Farm, an early 17th-century brick farmhouse, stayed with the estate until 1966.
A mansion cut into flats, and plots cut off a lane
Laleham Abbey was the estate's own house, built 1803-06 by J.B. Papworth for the 2nd Earl of Lucan, Grade II* listed, and converted into apartments in 1981 inside seven acres of parkland. Its north wing alone holds four. Along Staines Road the long driveways on the river side were once single plots running from road to water; they were divided through the 20th century and built on one at a time, so the stock there is individual rather than uniform. In a converted wing the oven is usually integrated under a counter, which makes it a single oven at Laleham Abbey at £77.
