Ladywell station was built in 1857 for the Mid Kent Railway, and its low, single-storey building at the end of Railway Terrace, extended around 1880, is listed at Grade II. At first the railway changed little. Ladywell was still a hamlet on the road from Lewisham to Brockley, named after a well dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Jerrard's houses on Algernon Road and Vicars Hill
The change came in 1880, when the fields on the eastern slopes of Vicars Hill (now Hilly Fields, a park in Ladywell ward that sits inside the Brockley conservation area) became available for development. Samuel J. Jerrard, then the leading developer in the Lewisham area, bought many of the plots. Through the 1880s and 1890s he built long stretches of Vicars Hill and the new Algernon, Algiers, Embleton and Ermine Roads, in red and yellow brick, for middle-class buyers. Lewisham designated the Ladywell conservation area in 2010, and its appraisal says his streets survive nearly complete.
Most are two storeys plus an attic; the four semis at Nos 82-94 Algernon Road, by Ellerdale Street, rise to three. One of the commonest types, says the appraisal, is a semi with one house gable-fronted, the front doors paired in the middle and a kitchen extension at the back. A kitchen in a back addition like that usually has more floor space than a flat's, and room for a freestanding double oven or a 90cm range cooker.
Owners and converted houses near the station
The census area round the station, Railway Terrace and the lower end of Algernon Road (Lewisham 014B) had about 660 households in 2021. More than half, 53.6%, owned their home, against 47.0% across Ladywell ward, and 28.5% rented privately. A large share of the big houses have been divided: 30.0% of households lived in part of a converted or shared house, and 35.7% had a whole terraced house.
Whichever floor the kitchen is on, the method is the same. Racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand indoors, with dust sheets on the floor, and the door is split where its design allows.

Parking in zone T, not LW
Two Lewisham zones carry the Ladywell name, and they are easy to mix up. On the council's parking map, zone T (Ladywell) covers Algernon, Embleton and Ermine Roads, Vicars Hill, Gillian Street and Ladywell Road west of the station, and the zone table gives it 9am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. Zone LW (Ladywell West) is further north, round Sandrock and Undercliff Roads, and is controlled only from 10am to noon. Ladywell was also one of twelve wards in the council's 2025 Sustainable Streets consultation, and the council's page says it is still analysing the responses, so the signs on your street are the final word. The table gives T no weekend hours.
The Playtower and Ladywell Park Gardens
The Ladywell Playtower is an 1884 bath house, Grade II listed and one of the earliest public swimming pools in the country. After years of disrepair following its closure and a fire, the council shortlisted four organisations in June 2026 to restore it. On the old Ladywell Leisure Centre site on Lewisham High Street, Higgins Partnerships started the main works in May 2026 on Ladywell Park Gardens: 102 homes in four buildings, 47 social homes and 55 for shared ownership, expected by summer 2028. Ladywell Fields, around a mile of park in three fields with a river running through them, lies between Ladywell and Catford.

No. On the council's map the Ladywell end of Algernon Road is in zone T, controlled 9am to 7pm on weekdays; the stretch near Loampit Vale is drawn in the Lewisham Central zone instead. LW is the short 10am to noon zone further north.
