Every Saturday from 9am to 4pm, Kingsland Market trades on Kingsland Road between Middleton Road and Richmond Road, with a car boot sale from 7am to 2pm. Locally it is also known as Kingsland Waste, and it relaunched under its present name in July 2018.
The east side of Kingsland Road
This stretch filled up early. By 1831, the Victoria County History records, houses lined the whole east side of the road. In 1845 villas were planned to face Stonebridge common; part of Stonebridge Gardens, the small park off Haggerston Road, may be a remnant of it. Sir William Middleton's building in Hackney began here, with an 1840 agreement for the land just east of the common: the Middleton Arms came first, then houses in Middleton Road, leased in 1842.
Just south of Haggerston Road, numbers 318 to 346 Kingsland Road are what remains of Kingsland Crescent, a long shallow curve of houses depicted in 1852. Each is three storeys with an attic in a mansard roof and a basement. In 1995 the same history called them a mistreated relic, altered by conversion into workshops (often for clothing firms) and offices.
Holly Street, built twice
Bombing made room for the borough council's first estates in Dalston, and Holly Street estate followed before 1961, east of the main road. By 1975 Cedar Court and three other twenty-storey towers stood along Queensbridge Road, and almost half of south Dalston's Victorian grid, from Middleton Road up to Dalston Lane, had gone, Woodland Street and the north end of Holly Street among it. The estate came down again in the 1990s. Levitt Bernstein's masterplan for Hackney Council brought back a network of streets with 1,050 new homes, finished in 2011; three of the four towers were demolished and the last was converted into homes for older residents.
The census area that takes in Glebe Road, Freshfield Avenue and the Kingsland Road end of Middleton Road (Hackney 031C) had 914 households in 2021. Half of them (50.8%) rented from a social landlord, almost all from a housing association or other non-council landlord (45.2%) rather than the council (5.6%). Another 34.0% rented privately and 13.1% owned; 58.7% lived in a purpose-built block of flats and 17.2% in a terraced house.
Homes built since the 1990s often have a fitted kitchen with a built-in oven, while an older flat on the main road may still have a freestanding cooker. Either way the racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately, and the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand in the kitchen, over dust sheets.

The figure depends on the appliance (a single, a double, a 90cm range or an AGA) and is fixed when you call. A Saturday visit costs the same as a Tuesday.
Parking off Kingsland Road on a market Saturday
On the council's zone map, Glebe Road, Freshfield Avenue and Middleton Road are in zone J (Queensbridge), controlled from 8.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays. Across the road, the streets of De Beauvoir Town are zone H, with the same weekday hours. The council's zone list shows neither zone with Saturday hours, though some streets carry their own signs. The top of the market stretch, towards Richmond Road, falls in zone C (Dalston), which the list shows as controlled Monday to Saturday. On Saturdays the market is on the main road between Middleton Road and Richmond Road, so if your door faces it, the van is likely to wait in a side street.
