Kilburn High Road is the old Watling Street, and it is also the line where Brent stops and Camden starts. Two councils, one street. Which side your kitchen sits on decides your parking and, for us, the length of the walk back to the van. The stock either side is much the same: subdivided Victorian and Edwardian terraces, post-war blocks, mansion-block flats.
The High Road splits the parking
Brent runs zone KD on its side, 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, which leaves the weekend free there while the Camden zones east of the road keep their own hours. Side streets are where the van goes. Solomon Barnett laid most of them out in the last decades of the 19th century and named them after West Country places and poets of the day, so Torbay Road and Tennyson Road are the sort of address we end up on. They are narrow.
Two kinds of Kilburn oven
The terraces cut into flats mostly have a freestanding 60cm cooker or a built-under single, blackened at the back because the fan cover never comes off. South Kilburn is the other half of the picture. Brent has been replacing those 1950s and 1960s blocks under a masterplan running since 2004, and the flats going up in their place carry integrated single ovens behind a fitted door, a different job from a forty-year-old freestanding cooker.
Shelves, trays and side runners soak in the heated tank in the van. The cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand with non-caustic products, and the oven is heat-tested before we leave. NW6 is inside the North Circular, so there is no call-out fee, and the prices we quote for a Kilburn High Road flat match everywhere else.

A single at £77 covers most of them. Kilburn is dense and rents turn over quickly, so end of tenancy ovens are a steady part of the week here.
Can you park near the Gaumont State?
Not on the High Road itself. We use the side streets and carry the parts. That adds minutes, not pounds.
Does the estate rebuild in South Kilburn mean a new oven is already clean?
No. Integrated ovens in a new flat still bake on grease behind the fan cover within a year or two of moving in.
The odd fact about Kilburn is that one terrace can sit under two parking regimes, because the boundary runs down the middle of the road rather than round the back of the houses.
