Kidbrooke with Hornfair was a Royal Greenwich ward until the May 2022 elections. It took in Hornfair Park on Shooters Hill Road and the 1930s streets south of it, from Begbie Road and Wricklemarsh Road across to Broad Walk and Corelli Road.
The 1930s Kidbrooke Park Estate
Kidbrooke stayed mostly farmland until the 1930s, when the Shooters Hill by-pass (now Rochester Way) set off suburban building, and the houses came very quickly. Kidbrooke Park Estates Ltd advertised the houses of the Kidbrooke Park Estate, on land south of Shooters Hill Road, in a booklet of about 1935 with a picture and plan of its Type C house; the estate included Wricklemarsh, Begbie, Harraden, Merriman and Weyman Roads. A photograph taken from Greenwich Cemetery in 1937 shows new houses along Broad Walk. On Corelli Road the London County Council opened Kidbrooke School in 1954, one of the first schools in London built from the start for pupils of all abilities.
The census still shows a district of houses. The census area Greenwich 022, which the House of Commons Library names Kidbrooke North and which takes in Begbie Road, Dursley Road, Kellaway Road and Broad Walk, had 2,542 households in 2021: 44.8% in a semi, 29.2% in a terrace and just 11.6% in a purpose-built flat, and 57.9% of households owned their home. In the smaller area round Begbie Road and parts of Wricklemarsh and Dursley Roads (Greenwich 022B) the semi share rose to 65.6%.
A 1930s semi usually has its kitchen at the back, and some will have been extended. A larger kitchen may hold a built-in double, a single wide oven or a 90cm range, and each is priced on its own.

Hornfair Park, the other half of the name
The London County Council bought the land from the Maryon-Wilson family in 1926 for housing, then handed it to its parks department in 1935; it opened as Charlton Playing Fields in 1936 and became Hornfair Park in 1948. Charlton Lido, in the park, opened on 6 May 1939, the last and smallest of the four lidos the LCC built in the late 1930s.

Parking on the Kidbrooke Park streets
Royal Greenwich's CPZ map, which the council calls a guide only, shows no controlled zone on Begbie, Kellaway, Wishart or Corelli Roads, or on Broad Walk. Signs on the street overrule the map, so check yours. The team needs somewhere to park, so say if you have a drive.

No. Since 2022 the Kidbrooke Park Estate streets have been in Kidbrooke Park ward, and Hornfair Park and Hornfair Road are in Charlton Hornfair.

No. Kidbrooke Village is the rebuilt Ferrier Estate round Kidbrooke station; it has its own Kidbrooke page.
