In 1703 the Richmond manor records counted 34 dwellings in Kew, with 153 people living in them. By the middle of that century there were about eighty houses round the Green, and Georgian houses were replacing the old cottages.
The Priory estate, east of Kew Green
The land east of the Green once belonged to Merton Abbey. In 1816 J.B. Papworth built the Gothic Priory estate there, on 16 acres; it was demolished during the 19th century but the name stayed. With commuters in mind, Forest, Maze, Gloucester and Priory Roads were under construction in 1866, and Bushwood Road followed after 1894. The council's Kew Green appraisal describes the estate as late 19th and early 20th century semis and terraces in red and yellow stock brick under slate, on narrow streets with low front walls and planted front gardens.
In the census area that covers the estate, the riverside cottages and part of Kew Green, 46.1% of the 655 households lived in a terraced house and 23.5% in a semi in 2021, and 74.7% owned their home. A family house of this age can have a knocked-through or extended kitchen with a built-in double or a range; a 90cm range takes 2 to 3 hours and a double about 2.
Cottages along the river
Between the Green and the Thames the houses are smaller. Willow Cottages were built in 1861 on former fishermen's land, Thetis Terrace in 1883, and Cambridge Cottages in 1886 and 1887, followed by Watcombe Cottages. Several are reached on foot, with allotments beside them. Where the van cannot get to the door, tell us when you ring. The racks, trays and side runners come out and are soaked and cleaned separately; inside, the cavity, fan cover and door glass are degreased by hand, on dust sheets.

Kew's southern zones, KA and KB, stop on Friday. North Kew's does not.

- 10am to 4.30pm every day, bank holidays included, and 10am to 11pm during major events. On the council's March 2026 zone map its boundary takes in Kew Green, Bushwood, Priory, Maze, Forest and Gloucester Roads, with Mortlake Road as the edge.
- KA, Kew (south of Mortlake Road)
- 10am to noon on weekdays on most roads, longer on parts of Kew Road and Kew Gardens Road.
On that map the Priory estate is inside KC, so a weekend visit falls inside the controlled hours: we need one of your visitor permits or a paid bay between 10am and 4.30pm, or a visit outside those hours. The same map shades Kew's zones as "CPZ / area under review" in the council's 2026 parking programme, so the times could change: check the plate and Richmond's zone list before the day.

Is parking easier on a Sunday on Priory Road?
Not between 10am and 4.30pm. On the council's March 2026 map Priory Road is inside zone KC, which is controlled every day, bank holidays included. Outside those hours the zone is not in force, and weekends cost the same as weekdays.
